
Trading Volume of Commodity Futures in Japan in 2024 of 22 Million 410 Thousand, Over 20 Million for the First Time in 4 Years
Jan. 31, 2025Trading volume in December on 3 commodity futures exchanges in Japan was 1,256,411 (18.8 percent down from the previous month), and as a result, trading volume in 2024 was 22,410,223 (24.4 percent up year on year), over 20 million for the first time in four years.In response to rising global geopolitical risks, etc. in 2024, trading volume increased as precious metals remained at high prices. Therefore, trading volume of Osaka Exchange gold standard was 9,449,568 (19.6 percent up year on year) and Dojima gold was 2,428,059 (179.9 percent up), becoming booming.
Also, trading value of commodity futures trading on Osaka Exchange was approximately 122 trillion (56.2 percent up), increasing significantly.
As for trading volume by exchange in 2024, Osaka Exchange was 18,483,388 (21.1 percent up year on year), and Tokyo Commodity Exchange (TOCOM) was 1,424,912 (23.6 percent down) because crude oil didn’t grow. Dojima Exchange (ODEX) was 2,501,933 (183.1 percent up) because gold was doing well, increasing 2.8 times in one year. Trading volume of Dojima rice average which started last August remained at 1,359 in five months. However, since Nissan Securities Co., Ltd., a member of ODEX, has essentially started trading, ODEX trading volume increased, and trading volume of Dojima rice average in December was 851-among them, the share by Nissan Securities was 40 percent-, being an upward trend.

As for trading volume of all derivatives trading on Japan Exchange Group (JPX) in 2024, stock related derivatives on Osaka Exchange reached a record high of 462,740,727 (18.0 percent up year on year).
Among them, regarding main products, although trading volume of Nikkei 225 mini decreased to 230,289,254 (8.1 percent down), trading volume of long-term Japanese Government Bond increased to 11,527,935 (20.6 percent up). As a result, trading volume of bond futures was 13,738,931 (39.4 percent up) and trading volume of all derivatives trading on Osaka Exchange also reached a record high of 464,165,639 (17.8 percent up).
