Commodity Futures Trading Volume of 18.01 Million Units in 2023, 7% Up from 2022

Trading volume in commodity futures markets in December last year in Japan was 1,753,386 units(15.4 percent up compared to the previous month), and as a result, commodity futures trading volume in 2023 was 18,011,649 units(7.1 percent up year on year).
In 2023, in addition to the increase in main precious metals, mainly gold and platinum on Osaka Exchange, the precious metal market on Osaka Dojima Exchange (ODEX) opened in March. Although trading volume on ODEX was almost nil in 2022, it was 880,000 units for three products of gold, silver and platinum in 2023. The share of trading volume on ODEX in 2023 increased to approximately 5 percent of total. Meanwhile, as for the commodity products on Japan Exchange Group (JPX), electricity products on Tokyo Commodity Exchange (TOCOM) experienced a significant decline across the board.
